Reuters quoted an anonymous source on December 1 saying that the explosives were detonated when a freight train passed through the Chertov bridge in the Buryatia region of Siberia, bordering Mongolia and thousands of kilometers from Ukraine.

The source said the train used an alternative railway line, after an attack that occurred nearby  a day earlier caused trains to be diverted.

Baza, a Russian media outlet with security sources, said diesel fuel tanks caught fire on a train using an alternative route and six freight cars caught fire.

According to Ukrainian sources, both attacks were carried out by the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU).

Previously, Reuters quoted an anonymous source from Ukraine on November 30 saying that forces of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) detonated four explosive devices when a freight train moved through the Severomuysky tunnel in the Buryatia region.

Sources say that Russia also uses this railway for military purposes.

Russian authorities are investigating the cause of the incident.

Previously, Ukraine’s long-range attack capabilities were relatively limited and had to depend on Western aid.

Kommersant newspaper reported on December 1 that Russian investigators concluded that a train caught fire in the Severomuysky railway tunnel in the Buryatia region, Siberia, due to a `terrorist act` by an unidentified group of people.

According to the initial investigation, the explosive device was planted underneath the freight train.

Some sources say that Ukraine is involved in the incident, but Kiev has not commented.

Russian Railways, the state-owned company that operates the vast rail network, said traffic was diverted along a new route after the first attack, causing journey times to increase slightly but not causing disruption.

Ukrainian sources said the second attack anticipated the diversion of rail traffic and targeted the alternative route at Chertov bridge, on Russia’s main Baikal-Amur route through Eastern Siberia and the Russian Far East.

Russia’s Trans-Siberian Railway is widely considered more important for Russian freight transport than the main Baikal-Amur line.
